Getting started
Welcome to Matwise. Here's how to get the most out of your coach in your first week. It takes ten minutes.
Put Matwise on your home screen
It then opens full screen, like an app.
- iPhone: open matwise.app in Safari, tap the Share button (the square with an arrow), then Add to Home Screen.
- Android: open matwise.app in Chrome, tap the ⋮ menu, then Install app or Add to Home screen.
Tell your coach about your game
Setup asks your belt, how you play and a few questions about your game. The more honest and specific you are, the better every answer gets: name your guards, your best submissions and exactly where you get stuck.
You can change it any time from your profile, and your coach also remembers what you tell it as you go.
Ask the questions you forget to ask in class
Ask like you'd ask your coach, in your own words. For example:
- "What do I do when someone clears my leg from false reap?"
- "How do I stop getting flattened in half guard by bigger guys?"
- "Best way to finish the triangle when they posture up?"
Steps link to the exact second in a real instructional or match. Tap ▶ to check it. If no video shows a detail, your coach says so.
Let your coach break down a roll or a match
Under Matches → Analyse a video. A few tips make it far more accurate:
- Film from the side, with both of you in shot the whole time, and the phone held steady.
- Tap yourself and your partner on a clear frame, and say how it ended.
- Add one line about anything big, e.g. "He took my back at 5:10". Tip: tap the microphone on your keyboard and just say it.
- Answer the quick checks, and use "Did your coach get something wrong?" to correct it. It re-runs with your fix.
Your video stays on your phone. Matwise only keeps still frames, for 7 days.
Got a comp coming up?
Under Comps → Find a comp, add it from the IBJJF or Smoothcomp calendars. You get a countdown, a weight check, a prep checklist, and a coach that preps you for that event and its rules. Build your A-game under Game Plan and take it with you.

Questions
How does my coach know it's right?
It finds instructionals and real matches on your question, watches them, and builds the answer from what they show. Steps link to the second in the video they come from. Anything no video shows is labelled "Coach's note". AI can still get details wrong, so check new techniques with your instructor and train safely.
What does it cost?
7 days free with everything, no card needed. Then Matwise Pro is £4.99 a month if you choose to subscribe. We remind you 2 days before your trial ends and on the last day. Nothing is ever charged unless you subscribe.
How do I cancel?
Profile → Matwise Pro → Manage subscription → Cancel. Pro carries on until the end of the month you've paid for. If you're not happy, email us within 14 days of your first payment for a full refund.
What happens when my trial ends?
Without Pro the app locks, but nothing is deleted: your answers, plans, comps and matches are all there when you subscribe. Your profile and your data (download or delete) always stay open.
How many questions can I ask?
Up to 10 coach requests a day (questions, follow-ups, game plans, reviews) and 1 video review a day. The coach home shows how many you have left. Questions your coach refuses and videos it rejects don't count.
Is my footage private?
Your video stays on your phone. Matwise takes still frames, keeps them privately for 7 days so you can re-run a review, then deletes them. Nobody else can see your footage, answers or notes.
Why was my video rejected?
Matwise only reviews jiu-jitsu and grappling. Every upload is checked first, and footage that's mostly something else is rejected and deleted straight away. Make sure both of you are in shot for most of the video. A rejected video doesn't use up your review.
My video review got something wrong
Answer the quick checks, or tap "Did your coach get something wrong?" on the review, say what really happened, and re-run it. Your corrections are treated as facts. Filming from the side with the phone held steady helps most.
Does it know the rules at my belt?
Yes. Set your rules (IBJJF, ADCC, sub-only) and gi or no-gi, and your coach only recommends what's legal for your belt, for example no heel hooks below brown belt under IBJJF.
How do I download or delete my data?
Profile → Your data. Download everything in one file, or delete your account and everything in it straight away.
