Terms of use

Last updated 9 October 2026

These terms are the agreement between you and Matwise for using the Matwise app and website. They're written to be read: the most important parts are training safely and the AI coach can be wrong.

1. Agreeing to these terms

Matwise (matwise.app) is run by Ellis Waterhouse in the United Kingdom ("Matwise", "we", "us"). By creating an account or using Matwise, you agree to these terms and to our privacy policy, which explains how we handle your data. If you don't agree, please don't use Matwise.

You must be at least 13 to use Matwise. If you're under 18, you need a parent or guardian's permission, and they agree to these terms on your behalf.

2. Early access

  • Matwise is in early access: it's invite-only, free, and still being built. Features may change, break or be removed, sometimes without notice.
  • To keep it free, there are fair-use limits (for example, a number of coach questions and video analyses per day). We may change these limits.
  • If we introduce paid plans later, we'll tell you clearly beforehand. You won't be charged for anything unless you choose to sign up and agree to the price.
  • We may pause or end early access at any time. If we close Matwise, we'll give you reasonable notice and a way to get a copy of your data.

3. Your account

  • Keep your login details private. You're responsible for what happens on your account.
  • Give accurate information about yourself, such as your belt and the rules you compete under. Your coaching depends on it.
  • Invites are personal. Please don't share or sell your invite or account.
  • Tell us straight away at ellis@matwise.app if you think someone else has accessed your account.

4. Training safely

Brazilian jiu-jitsu is a combat sport with a real risk of injury. Matwise is a study tool for off the mat. It doesn't replace a qualified instructor, a doctor or a physiotherapist.

  • Only practise techniques under the supervision of a qualified instructor, with a willing training partner, at a pace and intensity you both agree.
  • Submissions, especially leg locks, heel hooks, neck cranks, slams and spinal locks, can cause serious injury. Apply them slowly and with control, and let go the moment your partner taps.
  • Follow the rules of your gym and of any competition you enter. Check what's legal at your belt with the event organiser, not just Matwise.
  • Nothing in Matwise is medical, nutrition or weight-cutting advice. If you're injured, unwell or unsure whether you're fit to train, speak to a medical professional.
  • You decide what you practise and how. You're responsible for your own training and for training safely with others.

5. The AI coach can be wrong

  • Matwise uses artificial intelligence to answer questions, build plans and read footage. AI can misunderstand a question, describe a technique wrongly, misread a position or a result in a video, or suggest something that isn't right for your body, level or rules.
  • We show where advice comes from (videos and timestamps) so you can check it. Tips labelled "coach's note" aren't shown in a video. Treat everything as a starting point to check with your instructor, not as an instruction.
  • Video analysis is an estimate from still frames. It can get positions, who's who and outcomes wrong. You can correct it, and we're working to make it more accurate.
  • Competition dates, weight classes and rules shown in Matwise may be out of date. Always confirm them with the organiser.

6. Footage you upload

  • Only analyse footage you have the right to use: your own rolls and matches, footage you have permission to use, or footage that is publicly available for viewing, such as published competition matches you're studying to scout an opponent.
  • Other people may appear in your footage. Use Matwise's analysis of them for your own training only. Don't use it to harass, shame, threaten or publish private information about anyone.
  • Don't upload footage that is illegal, sexual, violent outside of sport, or that shows anyone who hasn't agreed to be filmed in a private setting.
  • Your video stays on your phone. Matwise processes still frames from it as described in our privacy policy.

7. Your content

What you put into Matwise, such as your profile, questions, notes, plans, matches and footage frames, stays yours. You give us permission to store and process it, and to send it to our providers (including the AI), only as needed to run Matwise for you and as our privacy policy describes. This permission ends when you delete the content or your account, except for anonymous notes about public videos in our shared library and copies in backups until they're overwritten. We may use your corrections and feedback, without your name, to make Matwise more accurate.

You can use the answers, plans and analyses Matwise gives you for your own training and to share with your coach and teammates.

8. Using Matwise fairly

Please don't:

  • break the law, or use Matwise to infringe anyone's rights, including copyright in videos;
  • try to get around fair-use limits, access other people's data, or test, probe or attack our systems;
  • scrape, copy or resell Matwise or its content, or use it to build a competing service or train another AI;
  • use automated tools to send requests, or overload the service;
  • try to make the AI produce harmful, hateful or dangerous content.

If you break these terms, we may limit, suspend or close your account. Where it's fair to do so, we'll tell you why first.

9. Other sites and data

Matwise links to and shows information from other services, including YouTube videos, BJJ Fanatics instructionals (labelled as paid), Google Maps gym listings, and the public IBJJF and Smoothcomp event calendars. We don't control them and aren't responsible for their content, accuracy or availability. Their own terms apply when you use them. Matwise isn't affiliated with or endorsed by these services or by the instructors and athletes in the videos.

10. Our content and brand

The Matwise name, logo, app, design and the content we create belong to us. You may use Matwise for your own training, but you may not copy, modify or reuse our brand or software without our written permission.

11. Our responsibility to you

  • Matwise is provided free, during early access, "as is". We work hard to make it accurate and reliable, but we can't promise it will always be available, error-free or right for your training.
  • As far as the law allows, we aren't responsible for injuries from training, or for losses that weren't foreseeable, that come from your choices about how to train, or that come from relying on AI output without checking it, as section 5 explains. Our total responsibility to you for anything relating to Matwise while it's free is limited to £100.
  • Nothing in these terms limits responsibility we can't legally limit, including for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, or your statutory rights as a consumer under UK law.

12. Ending your account

You can stop using Matwise at any time, and ask us to delete your account by emailing ellis@matwise.app (see the privacy policy). We may close accounts that break these terms or have been inactive for a long time; we'll email you first where we can.

13. Changes

We may update these terms as Matwise changes. The date at the top shows the latest version. If a change matters, we'll tell you in the app or by email before it applies. If you keep using Matwise after that, the new terms apply. If you don't agree, you can stop and delete your account.

14. Law and disputes

These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales. If there's a problem, please email us first so we can try to put it right. If we can't, the courts of England and Wales can decide it. If you live in Scotland or Northern Ireland, you can also bring a claim in your local courts, and if you live in the EU, your local consumer laws still protect you.
