Picking the right weight class is the first real decision of any comp. This page lists the adult and master weight classes for the three tables most athletes compete under: IBJJF gi, IBJJF no-gi and ADCC Open. Kids and juvenile divisions vary by age, so check the event for those.
Want your class without reading tables? The free BJJ weight class finder works it out from your weight in kg or lbs.
IBJJF gi weight classes
IBJJF gi limits include the gi. A gi typically weighs somewhere between 1.5 and 2.5 kg depending on the size and fabric, so weigh yourself in the gi you'll compete in.

How IBJJF weigh-ins work
- You weigh in once, on the official scale, right before your first match, after the uniform check.
- Gi events: in your gi. No-gi events: in your no-gi kit. No shoes or anything else on the scale.
- Knee or elbow braces can come off for the weigh-in, but you'll be wearing them at the uniform check.
- You only get one go on the official scale. Miss weight and you can't compete in that division.
Because the weigh-in is just before your first match, there's no time to rehydrate after a big cut. For most people, especially at their first few comps, the right class is the one you already walk around in.
Age divisions
IBJJF uses the age you are or will be during the calendar year of the event: Juvenile is 16 and 17, Adult is 18 and over, Master 1 is 30 and over, Master 2 is 36 and over, then a new master division every five years up to Master 7 (61 and over). There's no maximum age for Adult, so masters can choose to enter the Adult division.
Choosing between two classes
- Close to a limit? Weigh yourself at the same time of day for two weeks before you decide. Your weight moves more than you think.
- First comp? Pick the class you're already in. Learning how comps feel matters more than a small size advantage.
- Gi and no-gi on the same weekend? The limits differ, so you may be a different class in each. Check both.
Next: your first comp, week by week, and what's legal at your belt.
Questions
Do you weigh in with your gi at IBJJF?
Yes. At IBJJF gi events the weight limits include the gi, and you weigh in once, in your gi, just before your first match. At no-gi events you weigh in in your no-gi kit.
What happens if I miss weight at IBJJF?
You can't compete in that division. You only get one go on the official scale, so check your weight on a practice scale first if the event has one, and read the event's own weigh-in rules.
Are IBJJF and ADCC weight classes the same?
No. IBJJF uses named classes (Rooster to Ultra Heavy) with different limits for gi and no-gi; ADCC Open events use round kilogram limits such as -76 kg and -83 kg.
What is the absolute division?
The open weight (absolute) division is for athletes of any weight at the same belt. Who can enter and how varies by event, so check the event page.
